Yunnan is one of the almost 30 province of the People's Republic of China. The province is located in southwestern China. It is bordered by three foreign countries and four other Chinese provinces. Yunnan covers an area over 380,000 km2 with a population of almost 50 million.

There is a distinct canyon region to the west and a plateau region to the east. Yunnan's major rivers flow through the deep valleys between the mountains. Beyond Yunnan's borders Yunnan resides a very special spot in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by three foreign countries; Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Vietnam.
